Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mario Gotze suffered a hairline fracture to his forearm during Saturday’s Ruhr derby against Schalke. Germany international Gotze was making just his third Bundesliga start of the season for Dortmund during the goalless draw at the VELTINS-Arena, but he lasted just 58 minutes of the contest before being replaced by Thorgan Hazard.
BVB have now revealed the extent of the injury suffered by Gotze, with the 27-year-old having fractured his forearm and sustained ligament damage to his wrist, but, despite the extent of the problem, the club do not expect him to miss any football and he could feature against Borussia Monchengladbach in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday. “The club’s medical staff have confirmed that Mario Gotze suffered a hairline fracture in his forearm and a ligament strain in his wrist during Saturday’s Ruhr derby,” a club statement confirmed. “Gotze may nonetheless be able to make an appearance in the DFB Cup match against Borussia Monchengladbach tomorrow evening.”
The former Bayern Munich star, who famously scored the winner for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place since returning to Dortmund for a second spell in 2016.
Gotze has started just 50 of a possible 111 Bundesliga games since making the move back to Signal Iduna Park, with the form of the likes of Hazard, Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus restricting his first-team opportunities.
