Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo says he is loving life at the club and he is learning from the “best” in Pep Guardiola. The Portuguese right-back joined from Juventus this summer for a fee of £60million, in a deal which included Danilo heading in the opposite direction.
Initially, he struggled to get into the side ahead of Kyle Walker and had to remain patient before playing his first full game as he lined up in their comfortable 3-0 triumph against Preston in the EFL Cup.
He has since started three successive games ahead of Walker, and the 25-year-old played his first full Premier League game in their shock 2-0 defeat by Wolves before the international break.
City got back to winning ways on Saturday with a comfortable win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
By their high standards under Guardiola it has been a below-par start to the season and they are currently six points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.
However, Cancelo is taking everything in his stride and says he is enjoying life at the club and Pep Guardiola is still the best in the world. “Pep I think is the best manager in today’s football. It’s true it took me some time to learn but what is important is that the Club do well,” he told City’s official website. “For me, as I said, he’s the best manager in football today. I came here to learn from him, and I think that when I play for him, I always learn something and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Cancelo arrived at the club to provide competition to Walker following Danilo’s departure.
He began his career with Benfica before moving to Valencia in 2015 where he spent three successful years.
Juventus then came calling and he spent the 2018-19 season at the Allianz Stadium, making 34 appearances before joining City.
He will be in line to play in City’s next game as they face Serie A side Atalanta at home in the Champions League.
