Eric Cantona has revealed he would be open to a return to Manchester United – but only if he’s asked him to become manager.
The Frenchman is revered at Old Trafford for his efforts in the iconic red shirt, and over a five-year span the forward won four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
Since retiring from the beautiful game Cantona has taken his career in a different direction, now finding work as an actor and documentary maker.
But the 50-year-old has indicated he could be tempted to return to football, but only if he got the chance to take the top job at his former club.
The former Leeds player believes that while Pep Guardiola would be the right choice to take the reigns at United, his commitment to Manchester City means the club needs to look elsewhere to find someone to play attractive football and win titles.
And Cantona is adamant about the seriousness of his proposal.
“I do many things and I’m very happy,” he told the Guardian. “But if they asked me to become the manager of Manchester United, I would.
“Because Guardiola is in Manchester City and they want someone to win things with wonderful football? It’s me.”
When asked if he was serious he added: “Yes, I’m serious. I say that just because it’s like when you are in the pub or the club. When you say you don’t care, all the girls want you.
“Maybe if I say I don’t care about that job, they will ask me. If they asked me, I’d work very hard, of course.”
Following Louis van Gaal’s sacking on Monday, Jose Mourinho appears set to take control at United and fill the vacancy at the club, with the former Chelsea boss the heavy favourite.
