Carragher hits back at Ferdinand’s Liverpool jibe

Jamie Carragher has hit back at Rio Ferdinand’s claims that Manchester United could end up like Liverpool if they’re not careful.

Ferdinand, winner of six Premier League titles during an illustrious career at Old Trafford, said this week that his former club could suffer a fall from grace similar to Liverpool’s if they fail to get their next managerial appointment spot on.

“I think if they bring someone else in, it is a huge decision because if this doesn’t go right, it could be a long cycle,” the BT pundit told the Daily Mail.

“We don’t want to be a repeat of what Liverpool have gone through. Manchester United don’t want that long time in the wilderness of not really winning or being successful and not challenging for titles. That can’t afford to happen at Man United.”

United are without a trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season at the club in 2013, and they’re struggling to live up to expectations under Louis van Gaal, whose side currently sit fifth in the table and could end the campaign without Champions League football for the second time in three years.

The Reds haven’t won the league since 1990, suffering a massive baron spell over the past two decades, but Sky pundit Carragher, who famously led Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005, has hit back at Ferdinand’s comments via Twitter.

He tweeted: “5 times winners of the European cup, whats the problem??”

With 38 league titles between them, the sides are the two most decorated clubs in English football, but there’s been a real swing in momentum since 1990, which has seen United lift 13 Premier League trophies while Liverpool have gone without.

United last won the Champions League in 2008, three years after Carragher’s Liverpool, who’ve actually won two more European Cups than their fierce rivals; something the ex-Reds defender is clearly hanging on to.

Ferdinand’s former team currently hold the upper hand in 2016, as they sit four places and six points better off with just 13 games remaining, but with Jurgen Klopp’s men contesting the Capital One Cup final later this month, they could be about to add another trophy to their silverware war with United.
