Jamie Carragher has reportedly declared that Liverpool need to sign a top class holding midfielder this summer following the Martin Zubimendi’s rejection.
After seeming like he was close to moving to Anfield, Spanish midfielder, Zubimendi has decided to stay at Real Sociedad. However, it is anticipated that Arne Slot would stick with his present group of midfield players rather than going back into the market.
Liverpool will take on Ipswich Town in their Premier League opener on Saturday. After an impressive run of preseason results, including a win and a draw in Saturday’s doubleheader against Sevilla and Las Palmas, new boss Slot will have cause for cautious optimism.
Over the course of the weekend, the Reds used their whole squad, allowing multiple players opportunities to make an impression in two different lineups. However, according to The Mirror, Carragher is still worried, and not just about midfield.
What Did Carragher Say About Liverpool’s Transfer State?
“When you look at the Liverpool squad, they are a centre back short, a real top-holding midfielder short and they are missing an attacking player with blistering pace,” said Carragher.

“I don’t think [Luis] Díaz has that pace, [Cody] Gakpo doesn’t, [Diogo] Jota is sharp, but we can do with someone in that front line with that pace – basically we want Sadio Mané back in his prime.
“They are the three positions we need filled and I’m not sure if Liverpool will fill all three, but I’d like to believe we’d get two out of those three.”
