Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed that his side are disappointed with their performance in tonight’s EFL Cup semi-final, second leg against Hull City despite reaching the final of the competition.
United carried a two goal lead from the first leg but lost 2-1 tonight as their 17-game unbeaten run across all competitions came to an end.
However, Mourinho’s side prevailed 3-1 on aggregate and will face Southampton in the final at Wembley next month.
Carrick told Sky Sports: “I wouldn’t say we were relieved, we are disappointed in the way we played and losing the game. We wanted to keep our run going and we didn’t play well at all. Of course we are delighted to reach the final but it’s a strange feeling.
“We expected a tough game, they had to come at us, and we just didn’t play well. We don’t like losing and we’ve lost but we are in the final.
“You don’t get many chances to win a trophy so we have to grab that chance.”
United were rather disappointing against Hull tonight, and, although they equalised on the night through Paul Pogba after Tom Huddlestone’s penalty had given Hull the lead, it was the hosts who would score again through Oumar Niasse.
Mourinho’s side will hope to perform significantly better when they host Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
United have struggled for consistency this season, and, although they had a good run recently, Mourinho will surely be concerned with tonight’s performance.
