Celta Vigo sack Escriba after Getafe loss

Celta Vigo have parted company with coach Fran Escriba following Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat against Getafe. The former Villarreal coach was only handed the Celta job in March and did a fine job when rallying the troops in the latter stages of the season to help them avoid relegation.
However Escriba has failed to move them on in this campaign and they are involved in another relegation after managing just two wins so far this season.
They have drawn three and lost the other seven, including Sunday’s defeat against Getafe, when Chelsea loan star Kenedy grabbed the only goal of the game.
Getafe moved to within three points of Barcelona at the top of the table, but Celta Vigo are now down in 18th, two points away from Real Mallorca, who sit just outside the relegation places.
Celta officials have decided enough is enough and have opted to make the change now in the hope there is enough time for the new man to pull them out of trouble once again. “Fran Escriba will not continue in charge of Celta. The club would like to thank him and his coaching staff for their efforts and commitment and wish them success in the future,” the Galician club said in a statement.
The club have yet to announce a successor but time is of the essence so they are not expected to hang around when making a decision.
