Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi paid a touching tribute to his late grandmother after scoring the winning goal for his side against Bayern Munich.
Frattesi’s late goal gave Inter a 2-1 victory in Bavaria in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.
Lautaro Martinez finish from Marcus Thuram’s deft back-heel assist gave the away team a 1-0 lead, but with five minutes left, Bayern’s veteran forward Thomas Muller levelled the score.
Inter then produced the perfect counter-attack, with Carlos Augusto crossing from the left-hand side for Frattesi to score a stunning goal.
With a look of excitement on his face, the midfielder took off his shirt and ran to the corner flag in celebration.
It was his sixth goal of the season for Inter, but it was by far the most significant. According to The Mirror, the Italy international later revealed that it was even more meaningful because his grandmother had passed away the day before.
“In my life, I’ve always thought that my best quality was my mindset. I found myself in a situation where I couldn’t continue on my usual path,” Frattesi told Inter TV.
“I was very close to my grandmother and wasn’t used to seeing her like that. It was tough, but I know that she’s involved somehow tonight. Maybe she’s cheering me on from up there.”
Inter’s stalwart defense, which has conceded just three goals in 11 games, has been the foundation of their Champions League run. Next Wednesday, they will host Bayern in the second leg. If they advance, they will face the winner of Barcelona vs. Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.
