Chelsea have emerged as the bookies’ favourites to sign Leicester City
striker Jamie Vardy in this transfer window, as reported by the Daily
Express.
Just as Chelsea have struggled this season, the former Fleetwood Town striker
has flourished, and is now being linked with some of the Premier League’s
biggest clubs.
The Express report that Sky Bet have the Blues as 8/1 favourites to sign
Vardy before the winter window closes, and given their problems in the final
third for most of the campaign, he would certainly be a welcome addition to
their squad.
Diego Costa – despite showing signs of life lately with three goals in his
last two league appearances – has been off the boil this season, and back-up
options Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have barely been given a chance.
Meanwhile Vardy has gone on to become the Premier League’s joint-top scorer,
with Romelu Lukaku, on 15 goals.
The 28-year-old No.9 became the first player to ever score in 11 consecutive
Premier League games earlier this term and, along with Riyad Mahrez, has been
a principle contributor in Leicester’s push to second in the table.
Vardy’s conversion rate this season is 26.8%, but there are question marks
over the overall quality of his game, with his pass accuracy at just 65%.
Given Chelsea’s current league position and Leicester’s potential chance of
securing European football next season, it would seem a strange move for
Vardy to make at this point in the prime of his career.
Costa would still no doubt be Chelsea’s go-to option up front – his 20
Premier League goals from 26 appearances last season proved his quality – and
for a player that seems to thrive on momentum, playing a bit-part role from
the bench would be difficult.
