Chelsea Hold ‘Very Satisfactory’ Meeting With Barcelona Star Gavi ‘very Upset’ At Situation

Chelsea are trying to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding Gavi’s contract status at Barcelona, and have have held preliminary negotiations.

According to reports, Chelsea has begun talks with Barcelona about signing Gavi during the summer transfer window.

Gavi is one of Barcelona’s most valuable assets, having emerged from the club’s illustrious academy with great promise. The 18-year-old midfielder has already made 87 appearances for Barcelona’s first squad and appears to be a long-term staple alongside Pedri.

In September, he dedicated his future to his boyhood club by signing a rich new contract that contains an eye-catching €1 billion (£866 million) release clause. That contract, however, is now null and void because LaLiga refused to recognise it due to the club’s continued financial difficulties.

Gavi has since reverted to his far less lucrative youth contract and, as things currently stand, is free to depart Barcelona as a free agent in the summer. There is considerable doubt about his future at Barcelona, and according to AS, Chelsea is attempting to get him to relocate to west London.

According to the Spanish daily, Gavi’s agent, Ivan de la Pena, met with Chelsea staff, notably sporting director Christopher Vivell, three weeks ago in Madrid. The meeting allegedly went quite well, and they are scheduled to meet again shortly to discuss a potential contract for Gavi at Chelsea.

Gavi was overjoyed to sign a long-term contract with Barcelona last year, but he is now’very disappointed’ with the club for how they handled the subsequent troubles. It is unclear how it will be handled, with a £178m hole implying that they will be unable to acquire new players this summer.

Would Gavi be a good addition to Chelsea?

Since Todd Boehly’s partnership purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in May, Chelsea have spent almost £550 million on transfers. They are apparently attempting to entice Gavi with a hefty signing bonus, which they can afford because they may not have to pay a transfer fee.

For the time being, Gavi remains a crucial player of Xavi Hernandez’s club, which is expected to win LaLiga this season. He appeared in Monday’s 0-0 tie with Girona, which extended their advantage over Real Madrid to 13 points.
