Chelsea ‘Plan To Let Romelu Lukaku go At Cut-Price Fee’

Chelsea ‘Plan To Let Romelu Lukaku go At Cut-Price Fee’

Chelsea have reportedly accepted that if they are to sell striker Romelu Lukaku this summer, they will have to take a huge loss.

The Blues sealed the club-record signing of Lukaku from Inter Milan for a fee of £97.5m in August 2021, confident they had found a long-term solution in the middle of their attack.

The Belgium international, despite making 44 appearances and scoring 15 goals in all competitions, never felt at home under Thomas Tuchel and was allowed to return to Inter on loan.

At the time of his return, it was expected that a second temporary spell or permanent switch would follow, with the understanding that all parties were pleased with their reunion.

However, Lukaku has had a tough time at San Siro, scoring just five goals in 10 starts and nine substitute appearances in all competitions.

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta has already stated that the 29-year-old is likely to return to Stamford Bridge this summer rather than stay at his current club for another year.

With that transfer on the table, Chelsea theoretically have the freedom to make an offer for Lukaku, with the presumption that he has no future in West London.

Nevertheless, there is an acknowledgement behind the scenes at Chelsea that they will have to take a substantial financial blow, according to Football Insider.

According to the report, Chelsea will have to accept a fee less than £30m if they want to permanently offload Lukaku.

It may be realistic depending on his season’s end, but clubs are aware of Chelsea’s situation and desire to raise funds in the summer to improve their position with FFP.
