Chelsea Suffer ‘Painful’ Blow After Reece James Gets Extended Ban

Reece James will serve a four-game suspension following his red card in Wednesday’s 2-1 win against Brighton, which means the Chelsea captain will miss the first three games of next season.

His suspension is also a blow to his prospects of being called up for Euro 2024, as he attempts to establish his health to Gareth Southgate before the England boss chooses his squad for the tournament next week. According to Football.co.uk

James had hoped to make a late push for a spot in England’s team after returning from a five-month absence due to a hamstring injury.

However, he was sent off for striking out at Brighton striker Joao Pedro in an off-the-ball altercation only 17 minutes after coming on as a substitute in Wednesday night’s 2-1 win at the Amex.

After being sent off once this season at Newcastle in November, his three-game suspension has been increased.

James will miss Chelsea’s season-ending match at home to Bournemouth on Sunday, when a point is required to seal European participation.

He will also miss the first three games of next season, the latest setback for the right-back as he attempts to restart his career after a string of injuries in recent years.

James has made only five starts and 11 appearances for Chelsea this season due to a longer-than-expected recovery from right hamstring surgery.

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino described his red card as a “painful” blow.

Pochettino stated, “It’s difficult to express my opinion because I didn’t have time to witness the action. But it’s difficult [for us] because it’s a tremendous night of football, and he’s a key player.
