Chelsea have turned to former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso in their search for a new left-back, according to the Mirror.
The Blues have opened talks with Fiorentina over a £17m move for the Spaniard, 25.
Chelsea are short on numbers in the left-back position with right-footed Cesar Azpilicueta the only senior option and hope to land one before the window closes on Wednesday.
Cologne’s Jonas Hector and Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez have both been assessed but Alonso has now emerged as a surprise target.
After leaving Real Madrid, who he made one senior appearance for, in 2010 Alonso spent three years at Bolton.
He has been at Fiorentina since 2013, a spell that has included a half-season stint at Sunderland.
Spain under-19 international Alonso helped Sunderland stay up in 2014 and reach the Capital One Cup final, which they lost 3-1 to Manchester City.
The 25 year-old has been a fixture in the Fiorentina side since returning and caught former Juventus and Italy boss Antonio Conte ‘s eye with his performance’s in Serie A.
