Chelsea’s £50m Decision Leaves The Door Wide Open For Newcastle United To Sign ‘Superstar’

Newcastle are looking for a center-back during the summer transfer window.

That is regarded as a priority, as Eddie Howe seeks a player to be Fabian Schar’s long-term successor at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United want Dean Huijsen, and the 20-year-old appears to be an ideal fit to replace Schar. He is a good ball player who can play on either the right or left side, similar to the Swiss defender.

Chelsea are the favourites to recruit Dean Huijsen.

Despite being excellent for the Magpies, Tyneside does not appear to be Huijsen’s final destination.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea are now the top contenders to capture Huijsen from Bournemouth.

According to reports, the Blues are willing to activate Huijsen’s £50 million release clause, while Chelsea will offer him a lucrative contract to get him to Stamford Bridge.

That may be a double blow for Eddie Howe. Newcastle also wants Huijsen’s teammate Illia Zabarnyi, although Bournemouth is unlikely to move both centre backs this summer.

While Enzo Maresca’s pursuit of Huijsen may result in Newcastle missing out on two centre-back targets, it may also open the door for the Magpies to sign a replacement.

Marc Guehi, who missed out in the summer of 2024, is back on Newcastle’s radar.

Chelsea were said to be interested in signing Guehi in February, but that will undoubtedly change if Huijsen arrives in West London.

What Newcastle United learned about Marc Guehi last summer

Newcastle made several approaches to recruit Guehi from Crystal Palace in 2024. Finally, each offer fell short.

During Newcastle’s pursuit of the England international, Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish said clearly what was required to get Guehi out of Selhurst Park.

“Nobody has gotten to the valuation yet,” Parish said Sky Sports in August 2024.

“If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money.”

That could present Newcastle United with a fresh opportunity to get Guehi, while Chelsea’s pursuit of Huijsen may mean there is less competition.
