Chicharito closing in on becoming Mexico’s highest goalscorer

Mexico’s positive start to the Copa America has been aided by Chicharito scoring, as one goal is all that separates him from breaking Jared Borgetti’s record.

His goal in the 2-0 victory over Jamaica took the Bayer Leverkusen striker to 45 goals in total for the national team, just one behind the record holder.

The legendary Borgetti is the most prolific scorer in Mexican history with 46 goals but the former Manchester United star is expected to overtake him this summer.

The former Bolton Wanderers forward scored 46 goals in 89 games whilst Hernandez has been slightly quicker withhis 45 goals coming in just 84 matches.

After winning titles with the Old Trafford club, his international career has been equally impressive as he has scored in every international competition.

He has 24 goals in friendly matches, six in qualifying matches, one in the CONCACAF tournament, seven in the Gold Cup, three in the Confederations Cup, just one in the Copa America and three on the biggest stage, the World Cup.

At just 28 years old, Hernandez has several years left at the top level of international football and, as such, could break and extend the record in years to come.
