Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell says Jamie Vardy has refused to confirm if he will return to England duty. The 32-year-old retired from international football following the 2018 World Cup in Russia after he barely featured as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals.
Vardy was named in the 23-man squad and started the final group match against Belgium before playing second fiddle to captain Harry Kane.
The former Fleetwood Town ace made his debut in 2015 and scored seven goals for his country in 26 appearances.
England coach Gareth Southgate is well stocked in the striker department, with Kane, Marcus Rashford, Callum Wilson, Tammy Abraham and Jadon Sancho all available.
However, Vardy is back to his best after helping Leicester City climb up to second in the Premier League table.
He has scored 11 goals in 12 matches for the club and currently tops the Premier League goalscoring charts.
Vardy has told Southgate he would be available in desperate circumstances and Chilwell says he is keeping his cards close to his chest.
Chilwell told reporters at St George’s Park: “Vards is his own person, as everyone knows. “We have a laugh and joke with him and say: ‘You’re doing really well with the club, what are your thoughts?’ “He doesn’t really get into it with us. Him and Gareth have spoken, they’ve come to whatever decision they’ve come to and that’s between them. For anyone else to get involved, it would be silly.”
While Chilwell left Vardy behind at the King Power Stadium this week, playmaker James Maddison is currently on duty with the left-back.
The pair are hoping to play their part in European Championship qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo.
The duo will then return to club duty and link back up with Vardy in time for the league meeting with Brighton on November 23.
