Chiwell expecting Leicester to compete

Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell says his team can continue to defy their critics and fight at the top of the Premier League. The Foxes are third in the table following their thrilling 9-0 win over Southampton on Friday night. Chilwell opened the scoring before Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand was sent to the stands.
Youri Tielemans then added a second before Jamie Vardy, and Ayoze Perez both grabbed hat-tricks, while James Maddison also got in on the act. Brendan Rodgers’ side smashed several records as they left St Mary’s with all three points and they remain eight points behind league-leaders Liverpool.
While Southampton’s players donated their wages to charity at the weekend, Leicester looked on as Liverpool beat Tottenham to secure their advantage at the top.
They have already played Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool this season and Chilwell believes they can compete for silverware like they did in 2016 when they won the league title under former boss Claudio Ranieri. “We push each other hard in training, the gaffer doesn’t let our standards slip,” he told Sky Sports. “Everyone in the league is waiting for Leicester City to slip. We’re here, and we’re here to stay at the top of the league. We just need to keep working hard. “It’s nice to be at the top of the table, we really do want to stay there, and there is confidence in the dressing room that we can stay there. Everyone is pushing each other, it’s a really good squad, and we just need to keep progressing.”
Leicester were narrowly beaten by Liverpool when they met at Anfield earlier this month, but they will be hoping the Reds can make a mistake in the coming weeks. Rodgers’ troops have a relatively easy schedule, with Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Brighton all to come before the end of November.
They then face Everton, Watford, Aston Villa and Norwich City before Christmas Day.
