Italy manager Antonio Conte insists he does not regret his imminent move to Chelsea, but admits he would love a return to the Azzurri in the future.
Conte agreed to become the new Chelsea manager nearly two months ago with his contract with Italy due to expire this summer.
However, the Lecce-born tactician is to move to the English capital once his work is complete with the national team out in France.
The 46-year-old is currently spearheading Italy’s charge at the 2016 European Championships and continued their fantastic run by beating Spain 2-0 on Monday in the last 16.
There are many who now feel Italy could win the whole competition and thus leave Conte massively regretting his decision to move on this summer.
However, the former Juventus player and manager insists he made the right decision deciding to take up the Chelsea job, although he would love to manage Italy once again in the future.
“I’ve made a choice,” Conte said, as reported by Sky Sports. “I will have a significant experience abroad now. But clearly Italy has a place in my heart from every perspective and I hope to be Italy coach again in the future because there is no experience like that in the world.”
Italy will now face world champions Germany in the quarter-final on Saturday and a win over Joachim Low’s side would certainly leave the Azzurri as clear favourites to win the competition.
Italy have never actually been beaten by Germany in their eight meetings at major tournaments and famously defeated them at the 2006 World Cup on German soil, as well as at the 2012 European Championships.
