Antonio Conte has underlined the “respect” he has for under-fire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, insisting his achievements over 20 years at the club must not be forgotten.
The Frenchman’s future in north London is again under scrutiny following a humbling 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, all but securing a last-16 exit from the competition for the seventh consecutive season.
According to London Evening Standard, Wenger will be allowed to leave on his own terms, with the manager himself adding on Friday that he will be coaching next season at Arsenal or elsewhere.
“I have great respect for Arsene Wenger as a manager and a man,” Conte told reporters. “He has done and is doing a good job with Arsenal over [the past] 20 years.
“When you are the coach of a great team, you are under pressure at all times. Arsene Wenger is a great manager, one of the best in the world.
“Arsenal are very strong … it’s important to not forget the work the players and coach has done in the past.”
Next up for Chelsea is Saturday’s trip to Wolves in the FA Cup fifth round.
