Dani Alves has appeared in court to testify to a judge conducting the investigation into his alleged sexual assault.
Alves has been imprisoned since January 20 after being charged with sexually abusing a lady on December 30 in a nightclub in Barcelona. The Brazilian football player stated their intercourse was consensual and denied any misconduct.
Dani Alves asked to be released on bond while the investigation was ongoing, but the court denied him because he posed a flight risk. No trial has been scheduled.
Authorities’ initial investigation findings, the player’s testimony, that of the accused victim, and that of witnesses led to Alves’ detention.
According to Spain’s sexual consent law, which was established last year, sexual assault includes a broad range of offenses, from online abuse and groping to rape, each with a variety of potential penalties.
The maximum punishment for a rape charge is 15 years.
