David de Gea’s future at Manchester United is still up in the air, with the team reportedly considering triggering a one-year extension on his current contract.
The Spanish goalkeeper’s current United deal is up at the end of the season, and they currently risk letting one of their most important figures leave for nothing in nine months’ time.
United revealed wage bill hikes of £61.6m on the previous year (a 19.1% increase) as a result of high-profile acquisitions, earlier this week.
Meanwhile De Gea’s current deal saw him take home about £350,000 per week last season. If no extension is triggered, De Gea could leave the team next summer on a free transfer.
During his 11-year tenure at Old Trafford, the Spanish goalkeeper has worked his way to the top of the United dressing room.
He is the only member of the last title-winning Manchester United side still playing regularly.

However, given that United reported losses of £115.5m earlier this week, his eye-watering wages may prove to be a barrier going ahead.
Despite several high-profile gaffes in his United career, notably a costly gaffe against Brentford in the second game of the season, he has already received the backing of his manager, Erik ten Hag, who stated, ‘I am convinced that he can do it.’
