David Luiz has revealed his joy at scoring in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday night despite a knee injury that he has been carrying.
The defender opened the scoring for the visitors in the Premier League clash at Anfield after smashing in a superb free kick over the Liverpool wall, onto the post and into the back of the net in the 24th minute.
But Georginio Wijnaldum restored parity in the second half before Simon Mignolet saved Diego Costa’s late penalty to earn Jurgen Klopp’s side a 1-1 draw.
Despite failing to secure all three points, Luiz insisted the result was a good one for leaders Chelsea while he revealed his happiness at scoring despite suffering from pain in his knee.
“I feel tired!” Luiz told BT Sport. “It’s never easy to play here or get three points. We could have won the game but they played very well. In the end, it was a good result.”
“I think we both had an amazing game. The crowd is amazing here. You need to be happy to be a player and play this kind of game.”
When then asked about his free kick, the Brazilian said: “Sometimes you need to try a surprise.
“I’m not in the best position to take free-kicks because my knee is hurting and I can’t train every day, but in a game you need to see the opportunity.
“I’m pleased I scored.”
