Alessandro Del Piero has emerged as a surprise candidate to take over as Juventus president amid doubts over Andrea Agnelli’s future, according to reports.
The Old Lady are still reeling from the botched European Super League project, with Agnelli one of the orchestrators of the now-defunct plan that lasted only 48 hours.
Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Thursday that the current Juventus chief’s future in Turin is clouded in ‘more in doubt than ever’ before after the Super League saga.
And according to Italian news outlet Il Messagero, former Juventus striker Del Piero could be a president from next season should Agnelli leave the Turin club.
Agnelli angered UEFA by resigning as president of the European Club Association in order to become of one the vice-chairmen of the project behind Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez.
The Juventus president has not retired yet but majority shareholder John Elkann could make a decision to relieve him of his duties in the next shareholders’ meeting on May 27.
Agnelli, who is Elkann’s first cousin, was first appointed as chairman of the Juventus board in 2010 and has overseen one of the most successful domestic periods in the Old Lady’s history.
Juventus have won all nine of the last Scudetto titles but Andrea Pirlo’s side are currently fourth in the Italian top-flight – 11 points behind leaders Inter Milan with six games to go.
Del Piero, meanwhile, is currently working as a pundit for ESPN in Italy after retiring from football six years ago.
The Italian forward scored 290 goals in over 700 appearances for the Italian giants which came between 1993 and 2012.
The World Cup winner with Italy includes six Serie A title and the 1996 Champions League in his 16 major club honours with Juventus.
