Denzel Dumfries Shares His Honest Take On The Penalty Verdict In Netherlands’ Defeat To England

Denzel Dumfries was not expected to see a penalty awarded against him during England’s triumph over the Netherlands in Wednesday’s Euro 2024 semi-final, but he was left angry by the’really unpleasant’ decision.

The Three Lions advanced to Sunday’s final against Spain after a 2-1 victory over the Dutch in Dortmund, which was not without controversy.

Xavi Simons gave the Netherlands an early lead, but it was short-lived as Harry Kane won and converted a penalty only a few minutes later.

The Bayern Munich striker fired a volley inside the penalty area, which Dumfries attempted to block, but Kane scored their first and his boot swung into the defender’s studs.

The referee initially gave nothing, but after a VAR intervention, he pointed to the spot, which Kane scored to tie the game and allow Ollie Watkins’ 90th-minute goal to win it.

Dumfries was reminded of handing away a penalty in the Netherlands’ World Cup quarter-final loss to Argentina in Qatar, admitting his defending may not have been’smart’ but being irritated by the decision.

‘The encounter against Argentina was on my thoughts at the time,’ Dumfries said on Trouw ‘I touched Kane’s side. I am the type of person that always goes for the defensive block.

‘You can ask yourself whether what I did was smart. On the other hand, it is not easy, because you are always “in the action”. That means that you can make mistakes, that is part of football. This is really annoying.
