Diego Forlan: I still watch every Manchester United game

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has revealed that he still watches every game that his old side plays.

The Uruguayan played for United between 2002 and 2004, scoring 17 goals in 98 appearances across all competitions.

Forlan scored two goals away to Liverpool in 2002, and United supporters still often sing about that game.

He told ESPN FC: “United fans like to remind me of the two [goals] I got at Anfield.

“They still sing that song, which is fantastic. I’m going to go with them to Anfield one day and stand with them.

“I still watch every United game on television. It has been difficult in the last few years but I enjoyed my time in England and still have a great affection for United. They’re the biggest club in the world.

“I arrived as a young player in England at a club full of top players. Had I gone back there as a mature player I would have done much better, but I was a better player for my time in England.”

Forlan is now back playing with his hometown club Penarol, but his strong association with United remains.

This promises to be an eventful summer for United, with new manager Jose Mourinho determined to ensure that his squad is ready to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is available on a free transfer, could well become United’s first signing of the summer transfer window, while there is also a possibility that Villarreal defender Eric Bailly could join.

Mourinho inherits a side that will be participating in the Europa League next season, which is far from ideal given the draining impact that competition can have on a squad.

United managed to win the FA Cup in Louis van Gaal’s final season at the club, but it is clear that improvement is needed, with the Red Devils having suffered 10 defeats in the league this term.
