Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has ruled out ever signing his son, Giovanni, despite the youngster’s form at Genoa.
Giovanni Simeone, 21, has caught the eye of many after standing out this campaign for Genoa, despite the Rossoblu’s struggles this term.
Andrea Mandorlini’s side are currently 16th in the Serie A table, but there has certainly not been a lack of effort from the young forward.
The Argentine striker, who joined the Italian club last year, has netted 10 goals in 27 league games this season – at least seven more than any other player at Genoa.
There has been suggestions that Simeone’s performances could prompt his father to snap him up at Atletico Madrid, but Diego insists that would not benefit his son’s career.
“It would be too big a sacrifice and playing football shouldn’t be a sacrifice,” Diego Simeone told Argentine radio show Perros de la Calle. “It is just a game, even though it is played by professionals.
“Giovanni has had a fantastic year at Genoa and scoring 11 goals (all competitions) in Italy in your first year isn’t easy. Thinking about seeing him in one of my teams would mean giving him a responsibility that wouldn’t be good for him.
“Giovanni has qualities that I like a lot and with effort and hard-work he will definitely become a big player, but not with my team. There are a lot of clubs that can give him great opportunities.”
Simeone Sr. and his son have, however, worked together in the past, when the former was appointed River Plate boss in 2008 where he decided to bring Giovanni along with him.
