Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo insists he won’t shoulder any of the blame if Antoine Griezmann joins Manchester United.
the Red Devils are keen to lure the France international to the club in the summer transfer window and are willing to once again smash the record transfer fee in order to do so.
Should United’s attempts prove to be successful then Griezmann would follow in the footsteps the likes of Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero and Fernando Torres – all of whom made their name at the Vicente Calderon before moving to the Premier League.
One man that has overseen all those departures is Cerezo and whilst he’s played down the idea of Griezmann leaving at the end of the season, he’s adamant that should it happen, the blame shouldn’t lie at his feet.
“Griezmann to Manchester? *small laugh* Small club,” Cerezo joked to Spanish TV station Antena 3 this week.
“But don’t blame me for a striker leaving like all the others in the past.
“I’ve been blamed for Agüero, Torres, Forlan, Diego Costa and now Griezmann. Who’s next?”
Despite not quite reaching the heights set over the past couple of seasons, Griezmann is Atletico’s top scorer in La Liga so far this season with eight goals to his name – which is four short of his total after 20 appearances in the 2015/16 campaign.
His chances of winning a piece of silverware were severely dented on Tuesday night as Diego Simeone’s side were eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Copa del Rey at the hands of Barcelona, meaning the Champions League is all they have to play for.
