Dortmund break Champions League record with thrilling 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw

Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw  made Champions League history on Tuesday, breaking the record for the most goals scored in a single fixture at 12.

Dortmund beat Legia 8-4 at the Westfalenstadion in a madcap game, sealing their progress to the knockout stages as a result.

Aleksandar Prijovic opened the scoring after 10 minutes, giving Legia a surprise lead, but Dortmund responded seven minutes later through Shinji Kagawa. Within a minute the Japanese international grabbed his second, while Nuri Sahin made it 3-1 on the 20-minute mark.

Prijovic then scored his second five minutes later to get Legia back in the game, but it didn’t spark a first half comeback, as Dortmund reasserted their dominance with further goals from Ousmane Dembele and Marco Reus to make it 5-2 at half-time.

Reus doubled his tally after 52 minutes, before Michal Kucharczyk grabbed Legia’s third. Felix Passlack made it 7-3 in the final 10 minutes while Nemanja Nikolić’s consolation equalled the record at 11 goals. However Reus’ hat-trick in stoppage-time made history, surpassing the game between Monaco and Deportivo La Coruna back in 2003.

Thomas Tuchel’s men sit top of Group F on 13 points, two clear of Real Madrid in second, while Legia find themselves bottom on one point, two adrift of Sporting Lisbon.
