Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka says he is “very glad” he gets to stay at Newcastle United after putting pen-to-paper on a new six-year contract. Dubravka initially joined the Magpies on loan from Sparta Prague in January 2018 and after impressing during the second half of that Premier League campaign, his stay was made permanent in May that year for a fee believed to be worth around €5million.
The Slovakia international, who has been capped 22 times for his country, has not missed a league game since he first arrived on Tyneside nearly two years ago, becoming a permanent fixture under former manager Rafael Benitez and current incumbent Steve Bruce, who replaced the Spaniard in the summer.
Numerous reports had claimed the 30-year-old keeper was in talks to extend his stay at St James’ Park and an agreement has now been confirmed between both parties, with Dubravka signing a new six-year contract, running until the summer of 2025.
The shot-stopper has kept three clean sheets from nine Premier League games this season and the north-east outfit will need plenty more of those if they are going to avoid dropping down to the Championship, with the club currently sitting 18th in the standings.
Reacting to his new deal, Dubravka expressed his delight and is looking forward to plying his trade for Newcastle for many years to come.
He told the club’s website: “It is an amazing feeling. I have to say that it feels like time has flown. It’s been almost two years and I’ve found great people here who I can call friends. I’ve enjoyed my time here and I’m very glad that I can stay here for another six years.”
Dubravka, who has made 28 saves this term to sit sixth in the Premier League’s statistics, is expected to start Sunday’s encounter at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have recovered from their slow start to the campaign and are on a four-game unbeaten run in the league heading into the contest.
