Burnley manager Sean Dyche says his side’s narrow defeat to Leicester City at the weekend is proof of how far they have come. The Clarets dropped to eighth in the table after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at the King Power Stadium. Burnley were handed a massive boost as Robbie Brady returned to the starting XI and they made a great start after claiming the lead.
Chris Wood found the back of the net after another excellent cross from Dwight McNeil, but Dyche’s troops failed to hang on. Strikes from Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans ensured Leicester grabbed all three points in the end.
Burnley were left aggrieved after another effort from Wood was ruled out by referee Jonathan Moss, but Dyche is looking ahead with plenty of optimism.
A year ago Burnley were struggling after being dumped out of Europa League qualifying, but they eventually turned their form around in the New Year to avoid relegation.
Now they are pushing towards the top six and Dyche says his team deserve plenty of praise.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I thought the performance, generally, was good. Don’t forget people are talking about Leicester breaking into the top four, and we certainly gave as good as we got. “We are in a far better place than we were at this time last season and that has to be registered. Our mentality towards these kind of games, to go away from home and take things on, has been strong so far, although we have to continue, of course.”
Burnley will look to make it three wins in a row at home when they welcome Chelsea to Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.
Dyche’s men have beaten Norwich City and Everton in their last two matches on home soil, and they have also kept a clean sheet in front of their own fans in three of their last four games.
