Emery confirms he has become Arsenal boss with message on official website

Unai Emery appears to have confirmed he will succeed Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager with a message on his official website.

An image of Emery on a red background next to the Arsenal badge was displayed on unai-emery.com – the official website of the Spanish manager which is linked to on his verified Twitter account.

A message next to the image read ‘proud to be part of the Arsenal family’ – despite the fact the Gunners have yet to officially announce who will be their next manager.

The early release of the image appears to be a gaffe by Emery’s media team as it was removed shortly after 11pm on Tuesday, having been posted earlier in the evening. Clicking the link for Emery’s website instead brought up an error message.

Arsenal are expected to confirm Emery as their first new manager in 22 years later this week following the departure of Wenger.

The 46-year-old impressed the Arsenal hierarchy during talks and moved ahead of previous first choice Mikel Arteta at the last minute.

While Arteta is believed to have hesitated over taking the job because of decision-making about transfers, Emery had no such misgivings.

It is thought that Emery, who is also comfortable with a relatively lean transfer budget of £50m having worked on a shoestring before, will sign a three-year contract worth £5m a year.

Emery won three successive Europa League trophies with Sevilla before his two-year stint at PSG, where he collected one Ligue 1 title and four domestic trophies.

If the message posted on his website is correct, he will be charged with returning Arsenal to Champions League football.
