The Football Association have reportedly decided that Lee Carsley will take charge of England in their UEFA Nations League matches in September.
The governing body is searching for a replacement for Gareth Southgate, who left following England’s loss to Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.
Since Southgate’s departure, a number of names, notably Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, have been connected to the position. Potter, the former manager of Chelsea, is still unemployed, and Howe is still in his position at Newcastle United.
The Under 21s manager Carsley is in place to take temporary leadership of the team while the FA continues to struggle to agree on a long-term candidate to lead the Three Lions.
In September, England will play Finland and the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League. According to The Telegraph as reported by The Mirror, Carsley is expected to be asked to lead the senior team, which will pit him against the nation he played for 40 times.

Carsley joined the FA system in 2020 and was named as the under-20s head coach before being promoted. He has been the Under-21s manager since 2021.
With a squad that included senior stars Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer, he guided the under-21s to the Euros championship last summer. Harvey Elliott, a player for Liverpool, has already approved of Carsley taking over.
