Birmingham City have appointed Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney as manager. The former England international signed a three-year deal with the club after John Eustace was axed from the position on Monday.
According to The Echo, the 37-year-old will be assisted by his former United teammate John O’Shea, Carl Robinson, as well as Pete Shuttleworth, who also joined him from DC United.
Ex-Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, who had a time at Goodison Park under Frank Lampard will also be part of Rooney’s backroom staff.
Following NFL legend Tom Brady’s investment in the team, Rooney voiced his excitement at taking over the St. Andrew’s head coaching position at this exciting moment.
“It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected,” he told Birmingham’s official website.
“We have some exciting young players in the squad, and some who are still to break through into the first-team, alongside a core of experienced senior professionals.”
After starting his managerial career at Derby County, Rooney took on a second position in the American capital with DC United. But it ended after 15 months as they were unable to qualify for the MLS playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Eustace left Birmingham in a good position for Rooney as they sit within the playoffs after 11 games in the Championship.
The international break will make the 37-year-old miss out on an immediate competitive action. But he will have more than a week to prepare with his new team.
Birmingham are up against Middlesbrough, a side managed by his former teammate at club and international level, Michael Carrick immediately after the break.
