English teams should be breaking the bank for Lewandowski

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski continued his superb season on Tuesday night and the Premier League’s big boys should be splashing the cash on him. Since breaking onto the scene in 2006 with Znicz Pruszkow, Lewandowski has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football and his status increased even further on Tuesday night in the European victory over Olympiakos.
The Poland international, who has 60 goals from 110 caps to lead his country’s scoring charts, netted twice as the Bundesliga giants picked up a 3-2 in the Champions League, taking the forward’s tally for club and country in 2019-20 to an incredible 21 goals in just 17 games.
In 2019, no player has been better in front of goal than the 31-year-old, who has netted 36 goals from as many games, while this season he has bagged 18 goals in his 13 appearances in all competitions, at least six more than any other player in the big five European leagues.
Lewandowski’s brace in Greece on Tuesday also saw him move to fifth in the all-time Champions League scorer charts on 57 strikes, moving him above former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
With all this in mind, it is strange to think a Premier League team has never gone all out to sign the Warsaw-born star, who would have joined Blackburn Rovers back in 2010 had it not been for the eruption of an Icelandic volcano delaying his flight to England.
When you look at some of the money that has been spent on strikers in England’s top flight, Lewandowksi surely would have been worth more than the likes of Andriy Shevchenko, who cost Chelsea over £30million in May 2006, and Christian Benteke, who Liverpool also shelled out over £30m for in July 2015.
Even though Lewandowski is 31 years of age, he still has many years left in the tank and, if you were a Premier League side looking to strengthen in attack, then the Pole is certainly the man to be going for.
Arsenal, for instance, spent a club-record £72m to sign Nicolas Pepe from Lille this summer, a player that has only had two good seasons in France, so why did they not go for the Bayern maestro instead?
It may have cost the Gunners an extra £10-20m but they would be bringing in a player that guarantees goals. Let’s think about what that forward three would look like. Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Lewandowski. One word…formidable.
Are there are other PL teams that could realistically make a move for the striker? Well, with doubts still surrounding the future of Harry Kane at Tottenham Hotspur, Lewandowski would arguably be an upgrade on the England international, who is still said to be a target for Real Madrid.
Chelsea, who are still banned from signing players in January, look to be putting their trust in youth this season under Frank Lampard and it would be a surprise if they opted to splash the cash next summer.
Manchester United certainly need to strengthen their attacking options, having sold Romelu Lukaku permanently to Inter Milan while allowing Alexi Sanchez to join the same team on loan, and Lewandowski would be the marquee signing they need.
Unfortunately, Premier League clubs may have missed the boat on signing Lewandowski, who has a contract until the summer of 2023, but if there is a sniff of acquiring his services, then they should jump at the chance.
