Fernandez has been linked to a move away from Chelsea in recent months, despite having a contract that expires in 2032. The most of the rumors have focused on an ambitious Real Madrid transfer.
Eduardo Burgos claims that a move to the opposite side of the Spanish capital was being considered since Fernandez was questioned by several Atletico players while overseas with Argentina for World Cup qualifying this month.
The most recent Argentina team had no fewer than five Atletico players. Alongside right-back Nahuel Molina were forwards Julian Alvarez, Angel Correa, and Giuliano Simeone, the son of Atleti manager Diego, and midfielder Rodrigo De Paul.
Fernandez was contacted by “several” Atletico personnel who attempted to persuade him to join the team, but Chelsea’s vice captain made it apparent that he had no interest in doing so.
Fernandez has pushed his way back into manager Enzo Maresca’s thoughts at Chelsea following a stint on the sidelines earlier this season, and he has no intention of leaving, reports 90 min.
Although it doesn’t seem like Fernandez will be joining Atletico, it is still stated that “all options are open” about his future.
