Erik Ten Hag slams ‘Complacent’ Manchester United Players After Europa League Defeat

Erik ten Hag slammed his careless Manchester United stars, calling them “complacent” for squandering a victory at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils blew a 1-0 lead in their first Europa League match of the season against FC Twente. Sam Lammers cancelled off Christian Eriksen’s initial attempt, and United were unable to go past their opponents a second time.

Ten Hag was particularly disappointed with his team’s second-half performance. The Dutchman was displeased by the manner in which Twente equalised.

Ten Hag responded to United’s negative attitude toward his old team, saying, “We are really ambitious, and when you have ambition, you have to perform and prove it.

“Today, especially in the second half, we were too comfortable. We didn’t finish it, and as a team, you must.

“You need to remain consistent and keep going. In the second half, we fell behind and conceded the goal. We cannot allow Twente’s right-back to dribble through the entire midfield without being stopped.

“We’ve seen again that you have to stay going throughout the game. Once you’re up 1-0, you must keep going and go for the second.

“For Twente, it was the game of a lifetime. They fought for every yard, when we did not, and 99 percent is not enough; you must give 100 percent. You need to kill the game.

Christian Eriksen, who gave United the lead with a magnificent strike before giving the ball away for Twente’s equaliser, believed the Dutch side wanted it more than Ten Hag’s men.

Eriksen stated, “They appeared to want it more than us, which couldn’t be right. We are disappointed as a team. We expected more, but it was far from adequate in the end.”

The Danish international continued, “Everyone is looking at themselves. For the most part, everyone is a professional footballer who understands what can and cannot happen. A game like tonight, we clearly do not lose, but it feels like a loss, which cannot happen at home against Twente.”
