England will be on home turf at Wembley for the UEFA EURO 2020 Final, but European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is ‘supporting Italy on Sunday.’
The trophy will be handed out on Sunday evening in London, as the Azzurri and the Three Lions go head-to-head.
Reporters asked who EC President von der Leyen – who is German – would be cheering on in the Final.
“Her heart is with the Squadra Azzurra, so she will be supporting Italy on Sunday,” said spokesman Eric Mamer.
The same is true for the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, whose Belgium were knocked out by Italy in the quarter-final.
Michel’s spokesman Barend Leyts assured he will be “forcefully cheering on the Azzurri” in the EURO 2020 Final.
This is the first major international tournament since Britain left the European Union and the decision to play the semi-finals and Final at Wembley have caused controversy.
The surging numbers of COVID-19 cases in England raised question marks, with some in the EU asking UEFA to move the games to Munich or even Rome, where the situation is more under control.
