Ex-Arsenal Star Claims He Left Club To ‘Become A Millionaire’

Former Arsenal midfielder, Alex Song has reportedly claimed he left the club to join Barcelona in order to become a millionaire.

The midfielder acknowledged that money was a driving force behind the move. And he knew going into the Spanish club wouldn’t make him play frequently.

Barcelona had players like Xavi Hernandez, Andre Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets available to them at the time. However, they made a £15 million bid to sign the Arsenal midfielder as a backup because they wanted to add additional depth in the center of the park.

The midfielder made the decision to leave Arsenal, where he was a vital member of the team, and join Barcelona’s squad in order to increase his income. When the midfield player joined Barcelona in 2012, it seems he was paid almost £70,000 a week.

Song has stated that he chose to accept Barcelona’s generous offer because he wanted to provide his family with a stable and pleasant existence when his career ends.

The player was told at the time by the Barcelona director that he would not be a regular starter for the team, but he was still keen to join.

According to The Mirror: “When Barcelona offered me a contract, and I saw how much I would earn, I didn’t think twice.

“I felt my wife and children should have comfortable lives once my career is over. I met Barca’s sporting director, and he told me I would not get to play many games, but I didn’t give a f*** – I knew that now I would become a millionaire.”
