Matteo Guendouzi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, two former Arsenal stars, had quite different experiences as Marseille were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.
In the third round of qualification on Tuesday night, Greek club, Panathinaikos shocked the French outfit by winning on penalties.
Aubameyang’s two goals in the first half gave Marseille hope that they would advance to the play-off round after losing the first leg 1-0.
They were the 34-year-old’s first goals for Les Phocéens following his last-month transfer from Chelsea on a contract that lasts until 2027.
It appeared that his work was finished when he was subbed off in the encounter in the 80th minute. But Guendouzi, his ex-Arsenal teammate promptly undid his tremendous effort.
As per a report from talkSPORT, in the last moments of the game, the 24-year-old committed a foul that resulted in a penalty kick, which Fotis Ioannidis converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
It went to penalties when neither side managed to score in extra time. And Guendouzi had yet another forgettable experience.
In the shootout, the Frenchman took the opening shootout for his team, but opposition goalkeeper, Alberto Brignoli stopped his effort.
It ended up being the lone penalty that was missed as Panathinaikos defeated the French club 5-3 to set up an encounter against Braga in the next round.

Marseille will have to be satisfied with a spot in the Europa League group stage.
And because Marseille could be matched up against either Liverpool or West Ham, Aubameyang might be on his way back to England.
