Ex Liverpool Captain ‘Out Of England Squad’ For Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate’s preliminary Three Lions selection for this summer’s European Championships is expected to exclude former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. The roster will be revealed at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Henderson had a bad season with Al-Ettifaq and Ajax, therefore he was left out of the extended team. Not even making the first cut is a bitter blow for a player who has won 81 international caps, is the vice captain of England, and who the Three Lions boss has stuck by throughout the season, naming him in every squad and defending his selection, despite the controversy his initial Anfield exit caused.

Echo reports that Southgate later reduced his squad to a maximum of 26 players prior to this summer’s tournament in Germany.

Henderson spoke with Southgate about what the transfer may entail for his international future before leaving Liverpool to join Al-Ettifaq in a £12 million move last summer.

The switch earned him a lot of criticism, partly because he is a well-known LGBTQ+ ally.

But after just 19 games, the former Sunderland player tore up his lucrative contract in January, wanting to play for Ajax again in Europe since he was struggling in the Gulf State.

Curtis Jones Replaced Henderson

Henderson has made a total of 12 appearances for the Eredivisie club, but it appears that he hasn’t done enough to earn a spot in Southgate’s team for Euro 2024.

The 33-year-old’s future as an international player is undoubtedly raised by the omission.

Despite being named in the squad for the March international break, he did not play in the friendly against Belgium and Brazil.

Current Liverpool midfielder Jones is expected to receive his first call-up while Henderson is expected to be ignored.

Jones, a standout member of the England Under-21 team that won the Under-21 European Championship the previous year, was about to receive his first call-up during the March international break until he suffered an ankle injury against Brentford.

The England manager, Gareth Southgate, stated in March that “he was definitely somebody we were tracking very closely ahead of his injury.” “His performances undoubtedly excited us greatly.”

Jones made eight appearances for Liverpool in the last two months of the season after returning to play in April. However, after regaining his fitness, he only made two starts in the Premier League and was benched three times by Jurgen Klopp.

That hasn’t deterred Southgate, though, as Jones’ outstanding pre-injury efforts for the Reds were still sufficient to earn him his first call-up. In 2023–24, he continued his impressive form from the previous season, concluding with five goals and three assists from 36 games.
