Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender, Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31.
After joining Italian club Como on a free transfer from Manchester United in the summer, the center-back injured his knee during his debut game there last month.
In his three seasons at United, Varane featured in 95 games and won the FA Cup as well as the Carabao Cup, but injuries plagued him during his stay at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old defender earned his 93rd appearance for his country during the World Cup final loss to Argentina in 2022, and subsequently retired from international duty after the World Cup in Qatar.
“They say all good things must come to an end,” Varane posted on Instagram as echoed by The independent. “It is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfilment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.
