Former Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool striker, Robbie Keane has reportedly been forced to flee to Greece from Israel after the conflict between the country and Palestine broke out over the weekend.
According to talkSPORT as reported by Leeds Live, before being evacuated for Greece, Keane, the current manager of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, spent hours hiding with assistant coach Rory Delap in a panic room.
After agreeing to a two-year contract with the club in June, the job became Keane’s first managerial position.
The former Republic of Ireland star has previously worked with Sam Allardyce’s coaching staff at Elland Road. Both Keane and Allardyce failed to maintain the Whites’ Premier League status despite their best efforts.
Delap, a former teammate of Keane at the international level, was appointed as the club’s assistant manager. He was also forced to leave because of the conflict between Hamas and Israel. A long-running conflict that has been raging in the nation recently resulted in intense warfare.
The Israeli Premier League’s top team, Maccabi Tel Aviv, have gone undefeated through five games, winning four and drawing one. All games in the country have been forced into a postponement due to the disagreement.
The Israeli side are in the same group alongside Gent, Zorya Luhansk, and Bredablik in the Europa Conference League this term.
