After seriously injuring his opponent’s leg during a Copa Libertadores game on Tuesday, former Real Madrid great Marcelo was left in tears.
Argentinos Juniors defender, Luciano Sanchez will now miss up to a year of football action due to the terrible incident. Currently plying his trade for Fluminense in Brazil, Marcelo trod on the defender’s leg while he was attempting to dribble past him.
Shortly before the hour mark, Marcelo received a straight red and left the field in tears. The multiple Champions League winner apologized on social media as Sanchez prepared for surgery and the lengthy path to recovery.
What Did Marcelo Say After The Incident?
As reported by Mirror Football, the Brazilian said: “Today I have had to live through a very difficult moment on the pitch. I have inadvertently injured a colleague.
“I want to wish you the best possible recovery, Luciano Sánchez. All the strength in the world!”
Initially, it was believed that the 29-year-old had broken his leg. But a club-published medical report said that it was a complete dislocation.
Fernando Diniz, the manager of Fluminense and the man who will lead Brazil’s national team until the middle of next year, declared in a news conference that Marcelo didn’t deserve to be sent off. And that it was “an unfortunate event”.

The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw. And they will play again next Tuesday at the Maracana Stadium without Marcelo and Sanchez. With a spot in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals on the line.
