Ex Tottenham, Newcastle Star Sign New Deal With Premier League Club

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United winger, Andros Townsend has signed a long-term contract extension with Luton Town.

The Hatters gave a Premier League lifeline to the 32-year-old in October after he was unable to secure a contract at Burnley during the summer. Townsend’s contract was set to expire this month, but Luton have announced that he has decided to stay longer.

“Obviously I’m delighted; three months ago I thought my career was over,” said Townsend as echoed by Newcastle World. “So from going to begging around the world just for a trial to being offered a longer contract is a dream come true.

“It’s a special, special football club. I think we can really achieve something special this season. It’s only half-way done, we’ve got six months – 19 games – to pull off the unthinkable.”

The 13-cap England international had not played a competitive game since suffering an ACL injury at Everton more than a year before moving to Kenilworth Road. However, in his first 11 Premier League games, Townsend has shown promise by tallying two assists and a goal against his old side, Newcastle, right before Christmas.

“It’s an amazing signing for us,” Hatters boss Rob Edwards added. “Andros has come into the group with real humility and professionalism. He’s shown the whole group what it means to be elite and a top-end pro.

“For us to be able to tie him down to a longer-term contract is a credit to him – he’s been through a tough time, and it says a lot about him as a person.”

Townsend made his Premier League debut for Tottenham where he played 93 games before moving to Newcastle in January 2016 for a reported £12 million.
