Former Nigerian midfielder, Henry Nwosu has urged the Super Eagles interim coach, Austine Eguavoen to work on the team’s attack ahead of the round of 16 game in the o going 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Nwosu made this known on the backdrop of the strikers’ inability to convert some goal scoring chances against Guinea-Bissau; a game that ended 2-0 in favour of Nigeria.
Recall that the duo of Taiwo Awoniyi and Sadiq Umar have managed to score one goal apiece in the entire group stages of the tournament.
However, the 1980 AFCON winner in a chat with Completesports.com stated that the only challenging department in the team is the attack.
He advised the Technical Crew led by Eguavoen to work on that department in a bid to kill off game as at when necessary against teams in the knockout stages.
“Qualifying for the Round of 16 with nine points, shows the players determination and hunger at the tournament. At the same time, kudos to Austine Eguavoen for an excellent job well done on the Super Eagles players,” Nwosu, a former Green Eagles star told Completesports.com.
‘However, I am still not happy with the fact that our strikers are not converting half chances against teams like Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in the group stages. This is one area I expect the coach to work on because in the knockout stages we might not have all these goal scoring chances. So the few chances must be converted by our strikers.
“Awoniyi and Sadiq Umar must raise the standard of their game in the round of 16. One goal scoring chance being converted may just decide the game.”
