Boss Lucien Favre played down Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Inter Milan and said the Italians struggled to create anything for 70 minutes. The Bundesliga side were well placed on four points after the opening two games in Group F and were level with leaders Barcelona.
A win against Inter at the San Siro on Wednesday evening would have given them a massive boost in their quest to reach the knockout stages.
However, it was Inter who secured their first win of the campaign thanks to goals in each half from Lautaro Martinez and Antonio Candreva respectively.
The result blows the group wide open as Barca now sit three points clear at the summit after their win against Slavia Prague, but Dortmund and Inter are now locked together on four points ahead of a huge game at Westfalenstadion on November 5.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Favre was adamant that it didn’t reflect the pattern of the game and he is remaining positive about Dortmund’s chances of progressing.
He said: “We played well, we were stable and gave little away. Then they scored from our mistake, but without any glaring chances in the first half and at the start of the second half. “Until the 70th minute, Inter created almost nothing. We took risks and that’s dangerous because you expose yourself to the counterattack that way.”
Dortmund will now switch their focus to Saturday’s Revierderby encounter against Schalke at the Veltins Arena as the two sides bid to cement their place in the top-four places in the Bundesliga.
