Ferdinand Rips Into Ten Hag After Man United Champions League Failure

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has lashed out at Erik ten Hag to stop blaming the team’s wretched form on injuries following their elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

On Tuesday night, the Red Devils lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich, with Kingsley Coman scoring the game lone goal. United needed to defeat the German champions and hope Copenhagen drew against Galatasaray in order to secure a spot. But Ten Hag’s men were so poor in Group A that they were unable to even perform to the best of their capacity.

Ten Hag said following the game that he lacked the quality on the bench to make an impact on the game, particularly in forward areas. “The players gave everything, that’s clear,” the Dutchman said.

“You saw the spirit and I really have to credit the team for the way they worked together as a team against a good Bayern side and the energy, you need it from the bench. For the frontline, those options were limited.”

However, Ferdinand asserted that despite the number of injuries in the team, the United players will need to step up and perform.

Marcus Rashford was not present due to suspension, but Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Anthony Martial, and Lisandro Martinez are among United’s current absentees.

“He’s going to have to utilise the squad, players are going to have to step up,” Ferdinand told TNT Sports as echoed by The Mirror. “There’s a crazy stat going around now that the last forward player to score for Man United in the Premier League was Jadon Sancho!

“You look at people on the bench, Wan-Bissaka, he cost £45m. He’s not some kid with no experience, Varane came in today, it’s not like you’re bringing in guys that have never played at this level.”
