Tommy Fleetwood has won the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City in South Africa after defeating Marcus Kinhult in a play-off. The 28-year-old went into Sunday’s final round trailing overnight leader Zander Lombard by six shots, but he hit an impressive three eagles on his way to a seven-under-par 65. Fleetwood had hoped that his overall total of 12 under would be enough to secure the win, but Sweden’s Kinhult matched that with his final round 68. But, Kinhult could only manage a bogey at the first extra hole, and that allowed Fleetwood to seal his fifth European Tour win and first since January 2018 when he made an excellent up and down to save par. The Englishman picks up a US$2.5million winner’s cheque and moves up to second place in the Race to Dubai Rankings as he looks to be crowned Europe’s number one player for the second time in three years. Fleetwood told the European Tour website: “There’s only a certain few, come the end of every year, that have a chance of winning the Race to Dubai and three years in I’ve been lucky to be one of those guys every time – I’ll give it my all. “At a young age now you have a chance to set your family up for life and I think of all my achievements that’s the thing I’m most proud of. “It’s great to have something like that and put that one in the bank account but nothing comes close to holding this trophy – this is the most special thing.” Lombard slipped down the leaderboard as he made two bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine on his way to a final round 77 to finish on six under.
