Flick Outlines Plan To Reshape Barcelona Midfield Next Season

New Barcelona manager, Hansi Flick is reportedly devising a plan to reshape the team’s midfield ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Following his confirmation as the Catalan club’s gaffer on Wednesday, Flick has already devised a number of plans set to be implemented in weeks to come.

As the first team’s head coach, the 59-year-old takes over from Xavi Hernandez. His aim is to shape the team into his own vision and return Barca to their former glories.

As previously reported, there will be a number of changes to be executed at the club. Flick will likely switch from Barça’s customary 4-3-3 formation to his favored 4-2-3-1.

The German tactician’s proposal to restructure the Barcelona midfield has been described by Barca Universal, providing insight into the changes that the new manager has planned for the upcoming campaign.

In the 4-3-3 formation, Xavi used a central midfielder as a false winger, opting for a midfield square.

However, with two pivots and a playmaker, Flick will organize the Barcelona midfield into an inverted triangle in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

Flick likes to have Pedri free at the most advanced edge of the midfield triangle. So in his initial approach, he positions two firmly midfielders at the base of the triangle.

However, Flick does not overlook Fermín Lopez as a potential candidate for this position because of his goal-scoring prowess. Two more physically built and positionally adept midfielders would be assigned to guard the selected playmaker.

Ilkay Gundogan and Frenkie de Jong are considered as possibilities from the current team, but Flick also thinks Gavi is good.

Not to be left out, Barca are also searching for a new pivot midfielder to bolster their depth in that position.
