Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan admits people “laugh” when Arsenal are tipped by fans and experts that they will get their hands on the Premier League title.
Hopes were high for the Gunners at the start of the season that they could finally end their wait for a league title, after spending big in the summer on the likes of Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi.
However, once again it has been the same old problems for Arsene Wenger’s side, as the French tactician witnessed his team lose yet another big game over the weekend away at Chelsea.
Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by their rivals at Stamford Bridge, with Wenger’s men outclassed in every department in the capital. The result leaves Arsenal 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea and with virtually no chance of winning the title once again.
“History will remember [Wenger] well — as one of the greatest. Yet year after year Arsenal fail to win the title,” Forlan told the National.
“Opinions are divided on him. It’s quite sad because he’s a brilliant football manager and I admire the longevity which he has enjoyed at Arsenal, but something is not working there. They can’t carry on without being serious title contenders until Wenger decides to quit.
“There has to be a change in mentality at the club which must come from the manager. If not, a new manager. Change wasn’t good for Manchester United after so many years when Alex Ferguson stepped down, but it could be good for Arsenal. A new dynamic, fresh ideas, new coaches and players. Or do Arsenal stick with what they have?
“When Arsenal are talked about as title contenders, people actually laugh because they can’t see it happening.”
Arsenal’s next fixture is at home to an in-form Hull City on Saturday, before Wenger’s men face Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
